Footwork skills require you to move the feet in
different ways while jumping over the rope. Therefore, you can really
improve your agility by mastering these skills. The most basic
skills like the "Two-foot Jump" and "Jogging Step" are included in this
category. Diagrams of a few other representative Footwork skills are
included below.
Create your own Footwork skills by adapting your
favorite steps from sports or dance, whether it's folk dance or hip hop,
to rope jumping. To learn more about Footwork and other skills,
check out USAJRF's "Basic
Jumping Skills," or "Know Your Skills" Videos. The
former video focuses on teaching you how to learn basic jumping skills.
The latter demonstrates many Single Rope and Double Dutch skills as well
as naming conventions, but doesn't attempt to teach them.

The basic "Two-foot Jump" is
generally the the first skill
to learn for traditional rope jumping. Step-by step
instruction
on how to learn this skill can be found at the
Ropics - Exercise page.

The "Jog-Step" is another basic
jump that requires a little
more practice to learn but is worth the effort since it is the
most efficient way to jump rope. You essentially jump from
foot to foot. |
 |
"Side Straddles" (a.k.a. "Jumping
Jacks") are adapted from calisthenics. Just makesure that the rope
is overhead when
youspread your feet apart. Bring them backtogether as the
rope passes under. |
 |
The "Skier" is a good way to train
for that winter sport.
You don't have to stay in one spot while rope jumping. |
 |
The "Hustle" is a Footwork
"combination" (several skills put together) where you move forward
as you execute it. To do
this skill, lift the right leg, move forward and lift
the left, then the right, and then kick forward on the fourth
jump. |
